Treatment Works

Mental Health Services & Therapies

We do a lot of things to maintain our physical health, from going to the gym to seeing the dentist. Our mental health is no different. Mental health treatment services are powerful tools – for those living with mental illness as well as other individuals who want to maintain and strengthen their mental wellbeing.

Why Try Mental Health Treatment?

Why Try Mental Health Treatment

In 2021-2022, almost 33% of South Dakotans ages 18-25 received mental health services. Counseling and therapy are essential for treating and living with behavioral health conditions. But when you look at the overall benefits, they go beyond helping those with a diagnosed condition.

Mental health treatment is a way for anyone to heal and grow, helping you:

  • Develop better coping skills and self-understanding
  • Be aware of your own patterns and behaviors
  • Learn about yourself and develop new skills
  • Process trauma or past experiences
  • Improve your relationships
  • Deal with difficult life events like grief, loss of a job, divorce or illness

Mental Health Services

Mental health services are not one size fits all, and they can help anyone boost their wellbeing. Many providers tailor their approach based on their patient’s specific needs, pulling from a broad range of treatment options. Even if you’ve tried mental health services before or didn’t like your experience, it’s worth giving it another chance.

Counseling

Counseling can help you recognize triggers, develop self-help plans and talk through challenges.

Medication

Medications help manage symptoms and are often an important part of a broader treatment plan.

Psychotherapy

Different forms of therapy focus on reframing thoughts, behaviors, relationships, or social skills.

Peer & Group Support

Whether in a group or one-on-one setting, peer and group support pairs you with others who understand your journey.

Holistic Therapies

Complementary techniques like art and music therapy can help with stress relief, trauma and more.

Ready to Get Started?

  • Connect with a provider to schedule an appointment.
  • Consider journaling. It can help you track moods and thoughts leading up to your session.
  • Bring questions. Ask about things like insurance or what signs of progress might look like.
  • Be open. Be honest about your goals, emotions and what you’re hoping to get out of therapy.
  • Have realistic expectations. Your first session won’t solve everything – it’s just one step on your journey.

Common Misconceptions

Counseling can be what you want it to be. But let’s set the record straight on what it’s not.

Myth

“Therapists don’t help solve your problems.”

Fact

A therapist may not solve all your problems, but they can teach you how to solve or cope with them yourself using a set of tools and strategies.

Myth

“It’s expensive.”

Fact

Mental health care is health care. A variety of funding options are also available through Community Mental Health Centers to individuals who are assessed as needing treatment services. Funding options include:

  • Insurance
  • Private pay
  • Other third-party payers
  • A combination of state and federal funding
  • Medicaid

Myth

“Therapy is only for people with diagnosed mental health disorders.”

Fact

While those living with a mental condition certainly benefit from therapy, it can be for anyone wanting to improve their mental health, cope with life or improve their relationships.

Myth

“If I have a substance use disorder, I just need detox.”

Fact

For some, that may be true. But for many living with a substance use disorder, underlying issues or co-occurring mental health disorders often contribute. Therapy can help with what’s under the surface.

Myth

“You have to go to therapy forever.”

Fact

You can dictate the length of your therapy journey. Even short-term counseling yields long-term benefits.

Myth

“Everyone will know I’m seeing a therapist.”

Fact

Therapists and counselors abide by strict confidentiality rules. Your privacy is protected by law, and confidentiality is only broken if someone’s life is in danger.

Myth

“Therapy is a sign of weakness.”

Fact

Going to therapy means you’re serious about strengthening your mental health. That’s the opposite of weakness.
