Cannabis
Cannabis, or marijuana, is a mind-altering substance containing THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol). Under the care of a medical provider, cannabis can be prescribed for medical reasons to relieve pain, nausea, anxiety and stimulate appetite. Cannabis is the most commonly used federally illegal substance in the U.S.
Although there are medical benefits to using cannabis, it still presents dangers – especially for adolescents and young adults with underdeveloped brains. Short-term, cannabis use impairs your judgment and can lead to delusions, hallucinations and loss of coordination. Long-term, it can lead to learning problems, increased risk of psychosis and health issues related to smoking such as emphysema and bronchitis.
When used illicitly or in excess, cannabis may have a negative impact on your life, health, or relationships. It can develop into a substance use disorder. If you’re concerned about you or a loved one’s cannabis use, help is available.
